How To Avoid Germs
Whether you suffer from a chronic condition like Cystic Fibrosis, or simply want to avoid becoming ill during cold and flu season, avoiding germs and preventing infection can help you stay healthier. Germs are a natural part of our everyday lives, but we don’t have to invite them over for a party in our bodies. Preventing infection is as easy as adding a few simple steps to every day routines.
Perhaps the most obvious and frequently recommended germ-prevention technique is regular handwashing. The reason it’s so commonly lauded is that it works! Washing hands with soap and water, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds, is an effective way to reduce the spread of infection. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Build your Immunity
Healthy eating and regular exercise are among the best ways to keep your immune system in good working order. During cold and flu season, it doesn’t hurt to take a vitamin C supplement. Be sure to eat foods high in vitamin C as well. Talk to your doctor about additional vitamins and supplements that help support your immune system.
Clean Your Filthy Lucre
Money is disgusting! Whatever you may feel about it figuratively, the paper, and even the plastic, we use for transactions is a germ magnet. Wipe down your phone and any cards and keys you use regularly, with disinfectant at least once a day. It will not only keep your screen squeaky-clean, it will reduce your exposure to germs.
Six Feet of Safety
While it’s impossible to avoid all germ exposure, a good rule of thumb is to maintain a distance of six feet from anyone who is obviously sick. Parents may find this advice laughable- after all, you can’t avoid your sick child! But if you’re visiting a doctor’s office, or are otherwise exposed to a sick stranger, keeping your distance is the best way to avoid airborne germs expelled with every sneeze or cough.
