Sometimes, it can be difficult to determine whether you have a cold or allergies. Both of them have different causes. Colds are caused by viruses, which are external, living organisms that infiltrate and attack your body. Once you have the virus, it’s your immune system’s job to identify and attack the harmful foreigner. While it may not seem like it, your coughing and sneezing is actually your immune system trying to get the best of the virus. On the other hand, allergies come from an immune system that’s working overtime. When you have allergies, your body thinks that external substances like dust, dog hair, pollen, or peanuts are germs. Then, your immune system thinks it needs to attack them, making the symptoms for a cold or allergies quite similar.
Cold or Allergies?
Colds and allergies have a few main differences you can look out for. Colds usually last from between a few days to a couple weeks. They usually occur in the winter because when it’s cold out, people tend to stay inside more. While everyone’s inside, viruses have a better chance of hopping between one person to another because of everyone’s close proximity. Symptoms for colds sometimes don’t appear right away. When they do, they can include coughing, a sore throat, and a runny or stuffy nose. If you still have cold symptoms after two weeks, it’s probably a good idea to visit Alpha Care.
Allergies typically only affect your health when you are exposed to the allergen (so, the dust, pollen, or whatever you’re allergic to). Therefore, they can last for a few days to a few months depending on how long you’re around the allergen. You can be affected by allergies during any time of the year, but when your allergies are seasonal, watch out for symptoms during the spring and fall. These symptoms include itchy and watery eyes, runny or stuffy nose, and sometimes a sore throat or fatigue.
