Physicals are one of the most important steps of going through your family’s pre-school year checklist. A physical exam not only will allow your children to participate in school sports, but also identify any potential health problems, allergies, or otherwise before school begins.
Each year, it’s important for your doctor to get an idea of your overall health with some basic tests and exams of your appearance and body:
Vital Signs – Our doctors will check for blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature to make sure your child is in the normal, healthy range of these basic vital signs.
Heart & Lungs – Using a stethoscope, our doctors will check the status of your heart and lungs, listening for signs of a heart murmur, wheezing, and other health issues.
Head & Neck – Our doctors may examine your throat and tonsils, teeth and gums, ears, eyes, nose, thyroid, lymph nodes, and more.
Abdomen – Typically by pressing or tapping on different parts of your abdomen can help our doctors identify information about a child’s liver and abdominal function, or any signs of tenderness.
Skin – We will also check to make sure your child’s skin is healthy.
Nerves & Reflexes – To judge the health of a child’s neurological state, doctors will test muscles, nerves, reflexes, and balance.
There are many other parts of a yearly physical, depending on your family history, health status, and more. Your visit with one of the Alpha Care doctors may include other examinations and laboratory testing, but this will help you understand the basics and what to expect.
