Some people think that they only need to go to a doctor if they’re sick, but really, it’s a good idea to get a physical exam once a year. While there are going to be some differences in your exam depending on if you are male or female, there are a few basic exams that your doctor will perform to make sure you’re healthy.
Here are four of the medical tests you should have every year:
- Vital Signs Checked. At an annual exam, your doctor will first check your vitals, that is, your blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. Your blood pressure should be less than 120 over 80. If it’s more, your doctor will diagnose you with high blood pressure. Your heart rate should be between 60 and 100. Breathing 12 to 16 times per minute is considered normal for most adults. Lastly, a healthy temperature to have is 98.6 degrees.
- Heart Exam. When your doctor listens to your heart with a stethoscope, he or she is checking for irregular heartbeats, heart murmurs, or clues that could mean you have a heart condition.
- Lung Exam. You also should make sure your doctor listens to your lungs. Certain sounds like crackles, wheezes, or decreased breath can be indicators of heart or lung disease.
- Neurological Exam. During your exam, your doctor should check your nerves, muscle strength, reflexes, balance, and mental state. All of these have to do with your brain, so if something is wrong, you’re going to want to know what it is.
